Check out this awesome blog post by one of the artists who worked on Pixar’s “Up”. It’s almost overwhelming how much preliminary work goes into the creation of a film (digital or not). That and it makes me want to work on animated films.
Here is an example piece created to help design the tone of a scene, using After Effects:
